Farmers use micro-organism tech to fight pollution

Thursday September 18, 2008

MALACCA: About 175 poultry farmers throughout the state have begun using micro-organism technology (EM) to overcome pollution problems in farms.

State Agriculture and Rural Development Committee chairman Datuk Mohamad Hidhir Abu Hasan said the use of EM technology in the industry would be made compulsory by next month.

“EM technology is still not a common practice. We expect it to be used by all poultry farmers here within a year,” he told reporters at his office in Seri Negri.

He noted that the use of the environment-friendly substance would be among the prerequisite for farmers when they renewed their licences for rearing chicken, duck and quail.

If the implementation is successful, Malacca would be the second state after Johor to enforce the use of EM technology in poultry farming to check pollution, Mohamad said.

“It needs to be implemented as soon as possible as we do not want complaints from people. We are moving towards a developed state status in 2010 and want to move away from such problems,” he said.
