EM usage in River

EM tech being used in Malacca farms

Wednesday September 24, 2008

MALACCA: Some 175 poultry farmers in the state have employed Effective Microorganisms (EM) to overcome pollution, including foul odour.

State Agriculture and Rural Development Committee chairman Datuk Mohamad Hidhir Abu Hasan said the use of EM in poultry feed would be compulsory from next month.

“EM technology is still not common. We expect it to be used by all poultry farmers here within a year,” he told reporters recently.

He said the use of the environment-friendly substance would become a pre-requisite for farmers when they renew their licences.

It covers those rearing chickens, ducks and quails on small or commercial scales.

Malacca would be the second state after Johor to enforce EM technology in poultry farming to overcome odour and flies caused by animal waste, he said.

“It needs to be implemented soon as we do not want complaints. We are moving towards being a developed state in 2010 and we do not want such problems,” he said.

Since EM contained chemical-free organic compounds, Mohamad Hidhir said it was effective in agriculture, including waste treatment and rehabilitation of rivers

“EM can be used easily as farmers can mix it in poultry feed or use it in washing water in a 1:100 litres ratio,” he said, adding that a five-litre bottle of EM was sold at RM25.

To curb abuse, he said the Veterinary Department would supervise the use of EM by farmers while providing training, counselling and guidance.

Farmers use micro-organism tech to fight pollution

Thursday September 18, 2008

MALACCA: About 175 poultry farmers throughout the state have begun using micro-organism technology (EM) to overcome pollution problems in farms.

State Agriculture and Rural Development Committee chairman Datuk Mohamad Hidhir Abu Hasan said the use of EM technology in the industry would be made compulsory by next month.

“EM technology is still not a common practice. We expect it to be used by all poultry farmers here within a year,” he told reporters at his office in Seri Negri.

He noted that the use of the environment-friendly substance would be among the prerequisite for farmers when they renewed their licences for rearing chicken, duck and quail.

If the implementation is successful, Malacca would be the second state after Johor to enforce the use of EM technology in poultry farming to check pollution, Mohamad said.

“It needs to be implemented as soon as possible as we do not want complaints from people. We are moving towards a developed state status in 2010 and want to move away from such problems,” he said.
